Ever since childhood, when I read a Yoga book of my father's by Richard Hittleman, I'd been fascinated - but it wasn't until the seventies that I began attending regular classes. With my teacher's encouragement - thank you Michelle Bhana for the gift - I started teaching in 1985, and later trained formally with the British Wheel of Yoga. At that time I saw Yoga as a place to enjoy releasing stretches and relaxing postures. Yoga became my mainstay during those years of young motherhood and family life. I was happy to stay with the postures that came most naturally to me, also appreciating chanting, meditation and philosophy. From 1996 onwards I had the great good fortune over several years to study Astanga Vinyasa Yoga intensively with John Scott and Shandor Remete. I learned how 'moola bandha breathing' acts as a powerful transformer. I discovered unexpected hidden strengths emerging, and gradually over the ensuing years came to understand and accept my qualities and limitations with equanimity. David Swenson and Danny Paradise have, amongst others, been a great inspiration, and I continue with my practice and regular study with other teachers. In 2001, Sri K Pattabhi Jois generously gave me his blessing to teach Astanga, something I consider a great privilege. |
